【Hotel Park Terrace OGA】Glamping in the Midst of Winter

Travel

This time, we stayed at “Hotel Park Terrace OGA.” As a family that absolutely loves camping, we don’t usually go for Glamping. However, my husband happened to stumble upon this place while searching for hotels. Since it was the off-season, the price was right and the food looked delicious, so we decided to book a stay! Let me take you through the details.

Arrived at the hotel!

We left the Akita Prefectural Museum around 15:20 and headed to Funakoshi Station by train.

We said our goodbyes to a lovely person we happened to meet on the train.

We arrived at Funakoshi Station in about 20 minutes. The taxi we had reserved over the phone was already there waiting for us.

*Since it would have taken about 20 minutes on foot according to the map, we decided to call for a taxi.

After a short 5-minute ride, we arrived at the hotel just after 4:00 PM. The fare was around 1,000 yen.(6.5dollars)

Both on the way there and back, we were so grateful for the incredibly kind taxi drivers. It really made me feel like this area is full of wonderful people.

Across the river, you can see wind turbines on the opposite bank. At first, I thought there were only four, but looking closer, I realized there were actually quite a few more.

The ocean is right nearby, and being a brackish water area where fresh and salt water meet, it’s apparently a popular spot for many fishing enthusiasts.

I heard that the place was just renovated at the end of March 2025, so it was incredibly clean and beautiful.

The welcome service consisted of delicious orange juice and cookies made with Oga salt—a local specialty from the peninsula.

They told us that these cookies are freshly baked every single day. I was already a bit hungry, but even so, the refined sweetness and the light, crunchy texture were just so delicious that I couldn’t help but go back for seconds.

When the kids were munching on them saying, “These cookies are so good!”, they actually packed some in a bag and gave them to us as a gift. This wonderful sense of hospitality made us feel so happy, and I already felt glad that we chose to stay here!

We arrived at our room!

The glamping setup featured a dome-shaped tent with a clear front view. I had wondered if we might be visible from inside the hotel, but the first floor turned out to be the dining area and was designed in a way that kept our space private and out of sight.

As soon as we stepped inside, the kids were absolutely ecstatic!!

In addition to having no neighbors nearby, the wind outside was blowing so hard that no matter how much noise they made, you couldn’t hear a single thing once you stepped a foot out the door.

The room was equipped with two beds, a refrigerator, and heating appliances. It was also fully stocked with amenities.

The amenities for the children were just way too cute!

While the room’s main heating was already on, it was—as expected—a day with a blizzard blowing outside. The room temperature felt like it was sitting around 18°C to 20°C, so we decided to fire up the two additional space heaters that were provided.

Once we turned them on, it got nice and toasty! Since our family is used to having a stove at home, the kids knew exactly how to behave safely around them, so we could just relax and enjoy the warmth.

The Dinner We’d Been Waiting For!

The dinner plan included a 90-minute all-you-can-drink option.

There was also unlimited refills of rice and miso soup. The actual portions were quite generous, and we ended up feeling completely full!

None of us in my family drink alcohol, but the juice selection was wonderful!

They even had ginger ale, which I love, so my eldest son and I were absolutely delighted.

There were only about three bottles left inside, so when I asked if they had any more, they said, “We’re chilling them outside!” (lol).

Since they were being chilled by the outside air, it turns out the ginger ale had reached a supercooled state. The moment I popped the cap, the shock caused it to turn into a sorbet-like slushie instantly!!

It was the most delicious ginger ale I’ve ever had in my life (lol). Since it was such a special occasion, I gave the kids the green light to drink as much as they wanted!

Of course, the meat was delicious, too!

We savored the seafood by either grilling it plain or enjoying it as ajillo. There was also bagna cauda, so it was fantastic to be able to get a good helping of vegetables, too!

There are reportedly nine tents in total along with rooms in the main building, but there were only about three groups staying that day. Since only two groups, including ours, had the dinner plan—and our meal times were staggered—we practically had the vast space all to ourselves. It was that wonderful sense of relaxation you can only truly get during the off-season.

Bath time!

After being completely smoked out by the BBQ, it was finally bath time!!

Just like the dining area, the baths are separate for the hotel wing and the glamping area.

Once again, we had the whole place to ourselves.

With six shower stalls, it wasn’t an incredibly vast space, but since there were so few guests, it felt just right!

While the bath wasn’t a natural hot spring, the water temperature was perfect, allowing us to soak and relax thoroughly.

Before the bath, we had Babahera ice cream, which was being offered as a complimentary service to guests! It’s a taste of Akita’s summer, featuring strawberry and banana flavors scooped into the shape of a flower. It was quite sweet with a strong sugary hit, but it had a wonderfully nostalgic flavor.

Time to sleep.

The beds were two singles, but there were also folding mattresses stored in the back. Since we were told it was okay to use them, my husband took one bed to himself, while the kids and I spread the mattresses on the floor to sleep.

Thanks to that, I didn’t have to worry about the kids falling out of bed and could rest easy. They provide bath sets, but no pajamas, so you definitely need to bring your own!

There’s no toilet inside the room, so you have to walk over to the main building where the baths are located.

Because it was blizzard-ing in the middle of the night, it was actually fun to crunch through the fresh, fluffy snow that no one else had stepped on yet. While campsite toilets can be a bit scary at night, the facilities here were well-lit, clean, and felt very safe!

There were 9 tents in total along with rooms in the main building, and our tent was the only one located at the front of the main building, while the other 8 were around the back. While it’s a short walk from those back tents to the main building, there is a separate toilet facility located near that tent site.

Breakfast Time

When I woke up, the sunrise was absolutely beautiful. Since the land lies to the east, I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to see it well, but the view was perfectly clear. It was a stunning sunrise looking out over the ocean and the windmills.

The next morning, we had a Japanese-style breakfast. Both the rice and miso soup were free to refill, and for drinks, it was a self-service style where you headed over to the beverage corner.

The breakfast was elegant and sophisticated right from the start of the day, and it was absolutely delicious.

I was hoping to spend a graceful morning, gazing out at the snowy landscape and the windmills…

But then…The kids saw the snow and were itching to get outside (lol). Since it’s a great thing for them to be so excited, we decided to scarf down our food and head out!

Snow play until checkout!

The area right in front of our room was covered in snow! Since it was a path used only by guests, we were able to play there as much as we wanted.

My husband and my eldest son started mass-producing snowmen… and the result was a bit creepy (lol).

My second son seemed to find it a bit too cold and headed back to the room ahead of the others. But since he still wanted to play, he kept going out and coming back in over and over again (lol).

We played for the longest time surrounded by that beautiful scenery.

I packed in a huge rush during that time! The new compressible travel pouches I bought for this trip were a total lifesaver.

While waiting for the taxi back, the two of them were looking at a Namahage poster.

A kind staff member taught us that Namahage aren’t actually demons (oni), but are actually deities (kami), and also told us about some of the local events.

I also managed to take a quick peek at the souvenir corner right at that moment. I found some Baba-hera ice cream flavored popcorn and cookies and grabbed them—I didn’t see them anywhere else later, so I’m glad I did!

Our taxi arrived, and we left Hotel Park Terrace OGA at 10:30 AM. To catch the 1:00 PM Komachi Shinkansen from Akita Station, we took the taxi to Funakoshi Station.

My eldest son was staring out the window, looking so sad to be leaving. I’m just so glad he fell in love with the snow.

The taxi driver was such a kind and gentle person; he even picked up the kids to help them out of the car and reminded us to stay safe on the snowy roads.

The kids waved goodbye to him as we left.

Our final meal in Akita was sushi!
