There are all kinds of overnight diapers out there, but even among my nurse friends’ kids, it’s almost always one of two options.
This time, I’m comparing overnight diapers sold in Japan and sharing how to make them work in your favor.
- How overnight diapers differ from daytime ones
- A thorough comparison of Oyasumiman, Pampers, and Mamy Poko
- How to choose, from a nurse mom’s perspective
- Overnight diapers that I found prone to leaking
- What to do if it still leaks even with an overnight diaper
How Are Overnight Diapers Different From Daytime Ones?
Overnight diapers are built with far more absorption capacity than daytime ones, designed for much longer wear.

When kids grow out of diapers varies a lot, but among people I know, plenty of kids are diaper-free during the day but still wear an overnight diaper at night.
As kids grow, the amount they pee each time also increases, so leaks become more likely. That’s when overnight diapers come in!
Overnight Diapers: A Thorough Comparison (3 Types)
Unicharm Oyasumiman
My impression is that Unicharm’s Oyasumiman (a Japanese overnight diaper brand by Unicharm) is what most people use.
- Seriously thick: packed with absorbent polymer!
- Good width too: resists side-leaks
- Widely used: reviews you can trust
- Gathers are a bit floppy: might cause itching for sensitive skin
If you actually touch one, I think you’ll see what I mean — it’s seriously thick. That’s because it’s packed with so much absorbent polymer, which is why it’s popular for resisting leaks.
It’s also nice and wide, so it’s much more resistant to side-leaks too.

My older son, who’s used to Pampers, seemed bothered by how thick it is and by the gathers. If your kid has sensitive skin, the Pampers option I cover next might suit them better!
Pampers Overnight Pants
Pampers overnight pants are what our family uses. The price is about the same as Oyasumiman.
- Thin and compact: but still absorbs well!
- Modest width: narrower than Oyasumiman → easier to move in, but some say it side-leaks
- Gathers are soft too: fine for sensitive skin
It’s not especially wide, but the gathers fit snugly and it absorbs fast, so my impression is that it resists leaks well.
Our family travels a lot, and diapers take up a surprising amount of luggage space, so we’re loyal to the compact Pampers option.
The texture is really nice too — it’s not stiff or scratchy, which I think is another point in its favor.

I asked around among moms I know, and some said “the Pampers overnight pants leaked on us.”
Depending on where the pee comes out, a sudden big gush can leak through the narrower width of Pampers. If that’s the case for your kid, Oyasumiman might give you more peace of mind!
Mamy Poko Overnight Pants
Mamy Poko overnight pants are the cheapest of the bunch, but the leg gathers run loose and leak easily.
The polymer swells up once it’s wet, but by that point a gap had already opened up around the thighs. Because of that, it felt like it could handle the first void fine, but leaked more easily from the second one on.

I bought it because it was cheap, but I still have a bunch left over, unused (crying). I’m sure some people make it work, but plenty of families among my friends also said “we bought it once and it didn’t work out for us,” so I guess it wasn’t just me (lol).
Mamy Poko is made by Unicharm as a budget-friendly alternative to their Moony brand!
What Should You Do If It Still Leaks?
If you’ve already switched to an overnight diaper and it’s still leaking, check these points.
- Put the overnight diaper on right before bed
- Consider sizing up
- Check how you’re putting it on — are the gathers standing up properly?
- Try switching brands: go back and forth between Oyasumiman and Pampers
Do You Need to Limit Fluids Before Bed? A Nurse’s Take
People often say to limit how much your kid drinks right before bed, but personally, I don’t recommend that.
Feeling thirsty is often tied to what they ate — like salty food.
Here’s the quick version ↓
Eat too much salty or sweet food, and,,,
→ your body wants to dilute it with water (you get thirsty)
→ your brain notices there’s now too much water
→ you produce a lot of urine

In other words, I think it’s healthier to pay attention to what they’re eating rather than making them hold off on water before bed!
Basically, changing the diaper right before bed and sizing up will solve most of it!
A Smart Way to Use Overnight Diapers
You’d probably assume overnight diapers are just for nighttime, but I use them during the day too.
For example, on long car rides, or at a restaurant with a drink bar — any time I think “they’re going to pee a lot” or “I won’t be able to change them for a while,” I’ll put one on.

Overnight diapers cost more, so lately we use regular daytime diapers at night and save the overnight ones for outings — a small act of resistance against rising prices (lol).
