Our family stayed at the Renaissance Okinawa Resort in Onna Village on Okinawa’s main island!
There are resorts with all kinds of concepts, but this one goes beyond the beach and pool — it’s packed with activities that make it just as amazing for parents as it is for kids.

It’s pretty rare for a hotel to keep this many animals on-site. I’ll introduce them all later in this post!
Since it’s part of Marriott, we felt confident about the quality across the board — the restaurants included.
Access
About 50 minutes by car from Naha Airport (via the Okinawa Expressway, Ishikawa IC). You can also get there by airport limousine bus or the Okinawa Airport Shuttle.
If you want to explore the area, renting a car is really convenient!
To drive in Japan as a visitor from overseas, you’ll generally need all 3 of the following together: your passport, your home-country driver’s license, and an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention format). Requirements vary by country, so be sure to check before you leave home!
Checking In at the Massive Lobby
As soon as we parked at the entrance, a bellman came out to take our luggage.
We handed over our car keys and headed to the lobby.
※Staff move the car to a separate parking area — just ask a staff member if you need it back.
Walking into the lobby, you’re greeted by an atrium that opens all the way up to the top floor.
It’s spacious, and we immediately spotted kids everywhere!
The check-in counter is on the far left.
It’s so spacious that even if the kids run around a bit, they’re not bothering anyone. Most guests are traveling with kids too, so you feel that relaxed, family-friendly vibe right away.
Beach and Pool Access Even Before Check-In!
Check-in starts at 2:00 PM, but you can use the beach and pool even before then.
We headed straight over after checking out of our previous hotel and arrived around noon — they held our luggage so we could go play right away.
The resort has its own private beach and is huge.
We took a walk around the grounds right away.
A short walk brings you to a calm, gentle beach.
There’s an outdoor pool right nearby too!
Next to the outdoor pool is a cafe called Tip Top.
You can use it while still wet in your swimsuit.
They have everything from light snacks to drinks!

We didn’t realize we could use it this freely, so we’d already bought onigiri (rice balls) before arriving and ate those instead.
The bench area was shaded by trees and felt so pleasant!
Changing Rooms and Lockers Available Too
Behind Tip Top, there are changing rooms and lockers.
You can use these to change into your swimsuit right when you arrive.
The facilities looked a bit dated, but the AC was working well and it was nice and cool.
Having somewhere to change without heading up to the room is a huge help.
Nap Time at the Cafe!
Toward the back of the lobby is the Lobby Lounge, where you can enjoy cake, tea, coffee, and more.
The kids were getting sleepy, so we decided to rest here until check-in.
The sofas are spacious enough that even with a kid lying down, the adults still have plenty of room.
You order from a tablet, but you can also see the actual items on display!

Amazing Service When Check-In Ran Late!
Check-in was supposed to start at 2:00 PM, but it looked like it was running a little late. We were relaxing at the cafe and didn’t mind at all, but a staff member came by and gave us four cake set tickets anyway.
We’d literally just eaten cake (lol), but we were so touched that they gave tickets for our entire family.
We ended up using them the next day, and it turned out there was a special cake made just for these tickets, rather than picking from what’s normally sold.
Our Room
Now, let’s head up to the room.
A staff member helped carry our luggage all the way to the room.
Along the way, they kept chatting warmly with us — asking the kids things like “want to press the close button?” and thanking them.

The bed was spacious, and there was a sofa too.

We happened to stay while a typhoon was approaching, so the weather was pretty unstable.

Kids’ Amenities
Since this hotel is amazing for families, they’ve got kids’ amenities fully covered too.
Kids’ pajamas come in S/M/L, sized for 80cm, 100cm, and 120cm.
They even had kids’ beach sandals ready.
There’s a kids’ amenity set called Flippers.
As I’ll cover later, there’s a board where kids collect stamps by playing rock-paper-scissors with the staff!
Connecting Rooms and Ryukyu Tatami Japanese-Style Rooms Too!
We stayed in a standard room, but there are other room types with different concepts too.
Connecting Rooms (Flipper’s Connecting): two rooms joined together, great for larger groups. The rooms are painted and decorated with an ocean theme!
Japanese-Style Rooms (Japanese Regular): with Ryukyu tatami (Okinawa’s traditional square tatami mats) and shoji paper doors, these feel just like a classic Japanese ryokan.
The Connecting Rooms can hold 4–7 guests (up to 5 adults, with at least 1 child). They work great for three-generation family trips, or just for one family wanting extra space.
The rooms are really cute, so definitely check out the interior!

Hotel Facilities
After napping and recharging, we headed back out to explore the resort.
The Resort’s Private Beach
Here’s what the beach looks like. It felt bigger in person than in the photos we’d seen beforehand.
It’s enclosed by jellyfish nets and has lifeguards on duty, so it feels safe.
We even spotted hermit crabs on the sand!
This beach is certified as one of Japan’s “Best Beach 100,” a list selected by the Ministry of the Environment.
The criteria go beyond just water quality — “safety,” “convenience (how well-equipped the facilities are),” and “environmental care” all factor in too, which is exactly why it feels like such a safe, wonderful place to bring kids.
The key detail is that it’s not just any beach — it’s a certified “Best Beach,” recognized for how genuinely pleasant and safe the swimming actually is, not just for looking nice! Even with a typhoon approaching and the wind blowing hard, the waves stayed really calm.
There are some rocks on the left side of the beach. We spotted a huge crab there, but climbing on the rocks isn’t allowed, so we couldn’t chase after it (sob).
It does look like a spot where you could get hurt, so take a peek carefully if you check it out (lol).
We stayed in July, and by the afternoon the beach fell into the building’s shadow, which meant we could escape the direct sun!

Outdoor Pool
The outdoor pool is huge. It’s right up from the beach, so you can easily go back and forth between the ocean and the pool.
There were plenty of poolside loungers too.
There was a water slide too.
The kids’ pool also had a big shade cover over it.

Indoor Pool
The indoor pool had a water slide too.
There was also a spot in the back where you could warm up.
Towels are available for free at several spots around the resort. Even if you’re in and out of the pool or ocean all day, you just grab a towel, dry off, warm up, and drop it in the basket when you’re done — so easy!

Beyond the two main pools, there’s a water play zone with 5 water features designed for little kids to splash around in.

A Mini Zoo Inside the Hotel?!
Past the pool, there’s a garden-like area that looks a bit like a harbor.
There, we found all kinds of animals — dolphins, turtles, rays, birds, and even remoras.

Right next to the dolphins’ pool, which connects to the ocean, we found…
…a whole bunch of rays!
There were lots of fish in here too,
including remoras!
Learning About Animals, for the Future
One thing worth knowing: these animals aren’t kept here just for show.
The animals here are managed not by the hotel itself, but by OMRC (Okinawa Marine Research Center), a professional organization dedicated to marine life research and environmental education programs.
Dolphin captivity in particular draws a lot of criticism internationally, but here, no wild dolphins are captured — instead, the center runs cutting-edge research using artificial insemination and natural breeding to help sustain the species for the future.
A Huge Lineup of Marine Activities!
Renaissance Okinawa Resort reportedly offers more than 50 different activities.
From easy options like snorkeling and jet skiing to full scuba certification courses, there’s something for every level.
There are even more activities beyond what’s listed on the board.

This Hotel’s Best Perk! The Multi-Night “Club Savvy” Program
This was our first stay, so we had no idea this amazing perk existed — but we noticed tons of guests carrying cards that said “Club Savvy.”
“Club Savvy” is a special program available to guests staying 2 or more consecutive nights.
You don’t have to do anything special to qualify — just book consecutive nights and you’re automatically enrolled.
Depending on how many nights you stay, you get either “Club Savvy Light” or full “Club Savvy.”

The biggest draw is that staying multiple nights gets you free lunch, and activities at half price or even free, depending on what you choose.
As I’ll get to later, the all-you-can-eat sushi dinner is 7,000 yen (approx. $46.67) per adult — and that’s included free with the multi-night perk too. Use it right, and you can save a ridiculous amount!
This time, we wanted to try a few hotels we’d never stayed at before, so we booked just one night at each place and couldn’t use this perk ourselves.
The longer you stay, the more you save — between the free lunch and activity discounts, it adds up fast. If your schedule allows it, we’d recommend going for the full “Club Savvy” tier to get every perk!
Activities Kids Will Love
Marine Activities
There’s a huge range of marine activities — jet skiing, banana boats, the glass-bottom Kumanomi-go cruise for underwater viewing, fishing, trial scuba diving, Blue Cave snorkeling, and more.
You sign up at the counter in front of the shop.
Most of these activities cost extra, but if you have Club Savvy, you can get 30–50% off, and some are even free.
The sheer variety of activities is amazing. Pretty much anything you’d picture is available.
You might think you’d get bored on a longer stay, but it’s actually set up so you can try something new every day!
Kids’ Job Experience Program
For kids ages 4–12 (elementary school age), there’s also an activity where they get to experience working at the hotel.
It’s a surprisingly authentic experience — kids get dressed up in real uniforms as a bellhop, chef, Eisa (a traditional Okinawan dance) performer, bartender, and more, and take on actual hotel jobs.
While we were sitting in the lobby, we saw kids walking around in chef outfits and hats. The costumes were seriously legit, and the kids looked so proud!
Once they finish their “shift,” kids get paid in the hotel’s own currency, called Leaf, which they can spend at the shops and restaurants inside the hotel.
What’s the Kids’ Rock-Paper-Scissors Stamp Rally?
One reason this feels like paradise for families is the rock-paper-scissors stamp rally held throughout the hotel — a game format common in Japan where you collect stamps at different spots.
It’s basically a game where kids play rock-paper-scissors with staff around the hotel to collect stamps, like this.
Restaurant staff and shop clerks join in too. They notice the card right away just by seeing it, and offer to play without needing to be asked, so even though our kids are shy, they were able to ask for a round themselves!
Win one round and you get a stamp. Usually it’s 3 squares per staff member, but some kind staff will skip ahead and fill in extra squares, so even though there are 40 squares total, our family filled the card after playing with only about 6 people.
There’s also a separate stamp rally happening alongside this,
and once you’ve collected enough, you get to pick a toy from a treasure chest!
The Rock-Paper-Scissors Prize: A Plush Toy with “Renaissance” On It!
Fill all 40 squares and you get a plush toy as a prize! There’s a whole lineup of adorable sea-creature plushies — dolphins, turtles, and more.
⚠️ The prizes come in a top row and a bottom row, and the top row is reserved for repeat guests (when you complete the card, you get a “repeat guest” card as proof). First-timers choose from the bottom row.
Our younger son wanted the turtle (the kid choosing right next to him wanted the same one!), but in the end he went home with a dolphin instead (lol).
The tag has “Renaissance” printed right on it, so it makes for a wonderful keepsake and souvenir all on its own!
Dinner: The Sushi at “Roy’s Sushi Bar” Was Incredible!
We hadn’t made a dinner reservation and had a hard time deciding what to eat. With a typhoon approaching that evening, we didn’t want to head out, so we looked at the options inside the hotel instead.
Our whole family loves sushi, so the moment we see the word “sushi,” we can’t resist (lol).
7,000 yen (approx. $46.67) per adult. Part of us wanted to try one piece first to see if it was worth it, but we decided to just go for it.
The moment we walked in, we could just tell it was going to be good!
The sushi rice is made with red vinegar (aka-su), and the portions are small enough that you can eat a lot of it!
You can help yourself to what’s already out, and if you want more, you can just ask and they’ll bring it to your table.
Rolls and gunkan-style sushi are ordered by writing on a slip of paper, and they’re brought straight to your table.
Besides sushi, there were fried dishes, salads, and other individual items too.
There is also a wide variety of fruits and side dishes.
Ice cream was all-you-can-eat Blue Seal, Okinawa’s iconic local ice cream brand. They had vanilla, chocolate, purple sweet potato, and shikuwasa (Okinawan citrus) flavors.
Beyond ice cream, there were plenty of other desserts too. The purple sweet potato fresh tart was amazing!
Even on a weekday, the only open slot was 8:30 PM. If you want an earlier time, be sure to book well in advance!
A Thoughtful Touch from the Staff
A staff member quietly set a glass of orange juice for the kids next to me and said, “This is for your kids — please give it to them whenever you think is best.”
If the juice arrives too early, kids often fill up on it before the food — but thanks to that thoughtful timing, everyone was able to fully enjoy all the sushi!
The whole hotel is full of families, so there are kids everywhere you go. Being able to enjoy restaurants without worrying — places you might normally hesitate to bring kids to — is what makes this hotel amazing for both kids and adults alike.
Bedtime
Sound carries a bit in the hallway, so you can hear when someone walks by, but other than that, we barely noticed any noise.
Almost every guest is traveling with family, so there’s a mutual “we get it” kind of comfort even if kids get a little loud. Everyone seemed to be having such a good time — it was really heartwarming!
Breakfast: Choose From 4 Different Venues!
Renaissance’s breakfast is called “Wagamama Breakfast” (literally, “my selfish breakfast”), and its biggest feature is that you get to choose from 4 different restaurants!
- Sailfish Cafe (buffet, 7:00–10:00 AM)
- Irodori (Japanese breakfast, including the Ryukyu Breakfast “Ryukuzen” set — limited to 30 servings a day; 7:00–9:30 AM)
- Coral Sea View (burgers & breakfast, 7:00–9:30 AM ※seasonal)
- Four Seasons (teppan-style breakfast, 6:30–9:30 AM, additional 1,000 yen (approx. $6.67) for adults / 500 yen (approx. $3.33) for kids)
At select restaurants like Sailfish Cafe, kids ages 3–12 (elementary school age) get breakfast and dinner free!
Period: April 1–October 31, 2026 (it looks like this runs during other periods too!)
It says “ages 3 and up,” but kids under 3 are already free anyway — so in practice, it’s free from age 0 through 12.
If you’re using the “Club Savvy” multi-night perk, the other restaurants become free too!
Reserve via the QR Code in Front of the Restaurant
⚠️ For breakfast, you need to get a waiting number by scanning the QR code in front of the restaurant! Get yours early, especially on busy days like weekends!
We headed to Sailfish Cafe, but not knowing about this, we took our time getting there and ended up in a line.
You scan the QR code at the marked spot to get your waiting number. When it’s your turn, a staff member calls you.
There’s enough seating that you won’t be turned away, but it’s still smart to grab your number with some time to spare.
That said, since there are other breakfast restaurants to choose from, you can always pick a different one depending on availability!
Breakfast at Sailfish Cafe
Walking into the breakfast venue, it’s lively and bustling!
The usual Western breakfast spread is all there, of course, and
there’s a fun turtle-shaped melon bread that kids love, and
make-your-own Okinawa soba topped with soki (stewed pork ribs)
There were plenty of local Okinawan dishes too, like jushi (Okinawan seasoned rice).
This jushi had a great dashi flavor and was really delicious!
The drink stations were spread across 3 (or more?) spots, so even when it was busy, we could grab drinks without any hassle.
There wasn’t just a fresh-squeezed orange juice machine —
there was also one where you could make your own fresh grapefruit juice!
It takes a bit of arm strength, but you get a delicious juice out of it.
At first it felt stiff and I worried I’d break it (lol), but if you push down hard, it squeezes out plenty of juice!
Other Restaurants Are Available Too
For an extra fee, you can eat at the other restaurants too.
If you want to avoid the crowds, try something special like the teppan breakfast, or just want to switch things up during a longer stay, having other restaurant options is one of the best things about this hotel!
Facility Info: Free Laundry Is a Total Lifesaver!
Free Laundry — and the Dryer Is “Kanta-kun”
Every floor has a self-service laundry corner with washers, dryers, and detergent, and it’s free to use, 24 hours a day.
The dryer was a model called “Kanta-kun.” It’s a gas dryer, so it dries clothes thoroughly in a short time. There were plenty of machines too, so even with a mountain of laundry from all our water play, we could get it done right away!
The North Face, Swimwear Shops, and More
Besides the usual gift shop, the hotel has outdoor brand shops like The North Face and Helly Hansen.
There’s also an apparel shop that carries swimwear, and
another shop that sells water shoes and other beach gear!
Even if you don’t need to buy anything, it’s fun just to browse (lol). And if you forgot to pack something, it’s great that you can find most of it at the shops here!
What Makes This Feel Like a Real Okinawa Trip?
One thing I personally found interesting is just how many Japanese travelers stay here. We went during summer vacation season, which might be when the most Japanese visitors come to Okinawa all year.
Personally, I sometimes feel like if I travel abroad and hear my own language everywhere I go, it doesn’t quite feel like an international trip. This hotel draws a lot of Japanese tourists, but the staff themselves were very international.
It felt like a hotel where you could comfortably enjoy an international trip with peace of mind!

Renaissance Okinawa Resort isn’t the place for a quiet, low-key getaway — but it’s incredibly family-friendly, with sprawling facilities where you can spend the whole day without ever feeling cramped. It’s basically paradise for families.
We didn’t even get around to trying the activities in just one day (lol), so we’d definitely recommend staying multiple nights and taking full advantage of the “Club Savvy” perks!
