Nearest Station: Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station is the origin point for the Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Tokaido Shinkansen lines, and is also a major hub for long-distance highway buses to destinations across Japan.

It’s the perfect base for day trips or onward travel — a short trip from here gets you to Toyosu Market or Tsukiji Outer Market for fresh Japanese cuisine, and iconic landmarks like Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Disneyland, Odaiba, and Asakusa’s Kaminarimon Gate are all easily reachable.

Here’s a map of the Tokyo Station area. Yellow numbers mark the hotels, and green numbers mark nearby attractions. Details on each are just below.

Within walking distance of Tokyo Station, you’ll find three main areas: the Imperial Palace, Nihonbashi, and Ginza. Since this post is mainly about the hotels, the area information is tucked away below — click + to expand.

Imperial Palace (Kokyo)

Just beyond Marunouchi lies the Imperial Palace — the current residence of Japan’s Emperor, and the former site of Edo Castle. The grounds are spacious and peaceful, with wide lawns and moat-lined stone walls. A wonderful place for a stroll with kids, offering a rare pocket of calm in the middle of Tokyo.

Nihonbashi

A mix of office buildings and department stores, with the historic Nihonbashi Bridge at its heart — the bridge that gives the district its name (“Japan Bridge”). There are currently plans to move the elevated highway that runs above the bridge underground, which would one day open up a view of the sky from below.

  • Pokémon Center Tokyo DX (Green #3)
→ Also home to the Pokémon Café!

Ginza

Named after the silver coin mint that once stood here during the Edo period, Ginza is now Tokyo’s most upscale shopping district. Despite its modern skyline, it’s one of Tokyo’s oldest neighbourhoods — historic institutions like the Kabukiza Theatre (one of Japan’s premier traditional kabuki venues, dating back to 1889) still anchor the area.

  • Kabukiza Theatre (Green #1) — a celebrated venue for traditional kabuki performing arts
  • Art Aquarium Museum Ginza (Green #2)

This hotel is something of a legend among train enthusiasts in Japan.

The hotel occupies floors 3–7 of the 31-storey Pacific Century Place building, so the trains feel remarkably close and immersive — you’re at track level, not watching from far above. Whether you’re a train fan or not, it’s a genuinely special experience.

With only 57 rooms, it feels genuinely intimate, and the level of personal service is exceptional.

As of March 2026, there is construction on an adjacent building on the north side. The hotel’s website mentions that cranes may partially obstruct the track view. Just something to be aware of when booking.

Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Marunouchi

Nearest Station: Shinagawa Station

Shinagawa is one of Tokyo’s most convenient transport hubs. It offers quick access to Haneda Airport and a direct train to Narita Airport, and is a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen — ideal for onwards travel to Kyoto, Osaka, or Hiroshima. Getting into central Tokyo is also fast and easy from here.

The immediate area is mostly an office district, but there’s a well-known large aquarium — Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa — within walking distance. Odaiba is also surprisingly close — about 40 minutes by bus via Rainbow Bridge.

Area details are tucked away below — click to expand.

Shinagawa Area

Shinagawa is primarily an office and business district, but there are some worthwhile spots nearby.

  • Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa (Green #1) — a large, well-known aquarium with dolphin shows
  • Shinagawa Garden Terrace (Green #2) — a waterfront commercial complex

We’ve also written a detailed review of Shinagawa Prince Hotel with a focus on the train views and aquarium visit — check it out here:

Odaiba

A waterfront leisure district on Tokyo Bay, accessible via the Rinkai Line or bus. From Shimbashi, you can also reach Odaiba on the Yurikamome — an automated, driverless monorail (pictured) with no driver’s cabin, so you can stand at the front and watch the track ahead. It crosses Rainbow Bridge, passing dramatically under the arch of the bridge as it enters Odaiba.

Unko Museum (Green #3)

Yes, the name means exactly what you think — “Poop Museum.” Located inside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba, it’s a colourful, pop-art-style indoor play and experience space that kids absolutely love. Don’t let the name fool you — it’s clean, fun, and surprisingly creative!

There’s also a generous ball pit area — a great cool-down spot on hot summer days.

Tokyo Aqua Symphony (Green #4)

Opened in March 2026, this is one of the world’s largest fountain installations. Free to view from Odaiba Seaside Park. Shows run from 11:00 to 21:00, approximately 10 minutes on the hour, every hour.

Miraikan — National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Green #5)

Famous for its giant globe display, this is a world-class science museum with impressive permanent and rotating exhibitions. A great option on rainy days for all ages.

Shinagawa Prince Hotel (Main Tower)

A sweeping view over Shinagawa Station — one of Tokyo’s busiest rail hubs — from the upper floors. Impressive both day and night.

Who This Hotel Is Best For

A great-value train view hotel. Excellent access to both Haneda and Narita airports makes it an ideal pre- or post-flight stay. Combining it with a visit to Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa (the closest hotel to the aquarium, with a guest discount) is highly recommended.

Note: Shinagawa Prince Hotel has four separate towers — Main Tower, Annex Tower, East Tower, and N Tower. Make sure you book the right one!

Shinagawa Prince Hotel

Nearest Station: Oimachi

Located just south of Shinagawa, Oimachi is served by the Keihin-Tohoku Line, Rinkai Line, and Tokyu Oimachi Line. The station area has a large commercial complex (OIMACHI TRACKS), but compared to the other areas in this guide, it has more of a residential neighbourhood feel.

Nearby, you’ll find Shinagawa Aquarium and Oi Racecourse.

Shinagawa Aquarium

It’s a fair distance on foot, but a free shuttle bus runs directly from Oimachi Station to Shinagawa Aquarium. We’ve written a full report in a separate article:

We also have a comparison article between Shinagawa Aquarium and Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa:

Tokyo City Keiba (Oi Racecourse)

Primarily a horse racing venue in summer, but in winter it transforms into “Tokyo Mega Illumination” — a spectacular light festival that’s fun for kids and adults alike!

Other

  • The Rinkai Line runs directly to Odaiba with no transfers (approx. 30 minutes).
  • About 40 minutes by bus is JR Central’s Oi Vehicle Center — a massive facility where you can see rows upon rows of Tokaido Shinkansen trains lined up.

Hotel Metropolitan Oimachi Tracks

The hotel’s defining feature: it sits directly in front of the JR East Tokyo General Vehicle Center — a major Yamanote Line train yard. As evening falls, train after train returns here to be serviced overnight, then heads back out into the city in the morning. A fascinating spectacle that no other hotel in Tokyo can offer.

This hotel opened in March 2026. Some rooms have a balcony, and the train yard view — watching the Yamanote Line trains come home for the night — is something you simply can’t see from anywhere else. A truly unique stay for any train lover.

How to Choose: By Travel Style

Tokyo Station area is ideal for sightseeing around central Tokyo, or as a base for Shinkansen and long-distance bus travel to other parts of Japan. Trains and Shinkansen pass almost constantly — it’s one of the best spots in Japan for rail views, and the variety of trains is unmatched.

Shinagawa area is perfect if you’re catching the Tokaido Shinkansen, need fast access to Haneda Airport, or want a short trip to the aquarium. Even with limited time, there’s plenty to do nearby.

Oimachi has less direct airport and Shinkansen access than the others (the closest airport link is a highway bus to Haneda), but it’s just a short train ride to both Shinagawa and Tokyo Station. The train yard view is one-of-a-kind, making it a must for dedicated rail enthusiasts.

Wrapping Up

Having travelled across Japan, I can say that Tokyo’s trains and Shinkansen are in a class of their own — colourful, frequent, and endlessly varied. Trains pass almost non-stop from morning to night, so you’ll never be short of something to watch from your window.

All four hotels also offer excellent onward access — whether you’re continuing your Japan journey or heading home. Hope you make some wonderful memories!

Hope this was helpful!
