In July, I took my two toddlers to Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka. We had plenty of mishaps inside the park (see separate article), but our biggest fail was actually where we stayed.
The reason? Hotel location. The hotel itself was lovely — but staying far from the park turned out to be a major regret.
If you’re going to USJ with kids, I really feel that an Official Hotel is the only sensible choice.
This article covers why I recommend Official Hotels, plus what makes each of the 7 hotels unique — organized by need. If you’re trying to decide which hotel to book, I hope this helps!

Official Hotels vs Other Partner Hotels — What’s the Difference?
USJ’s partner hotels are split into three categories:
| Official | Alliance | Associate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number | 7 hotels | 8 hotels | 7 hotels |
| Location | Walking distance from park | Central Osaka (luxury) | Osaka Bay area & Kobe |
| Park access | Walk | Shuttle / train | Shuttle / train |
| Wait time monitor | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ |
| Themed rooms & merch | ✅ (varies) | ❌ | ❌ |
| Ticket purchase | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
Alliance and Associate hotels are great too, but the biggest draw of Official Hotels is location.
If you want to “get the most out of USJ,” Official Hotels are really the only choice.
Why Official Hotels Are Best for USJ with Kids
Official Hotels are USJ-certified, and all 7 are within walking distance of the park. That’s the single biggest selling point.
Let me walk you through the specific reasons I recommend them.
① Zero Train-Travel Stress
The nearest station to USJ — Universal-city Station (JR Sakurajima Line) — is packed in both directions. At Osaka Station (Osaka’s main train hub), even skipping one train didn’t help — the platform stayed crowded.
People with strollers, large suitcases, you name it — elevators get jammed too.
I thought “the hotel’s just 30 minutes from USJ, no big deal.” But at an Official Hotel, you just walk back to your room.
That difference is way bigger than I’d realized.

It was a weekday so we managed to get seats — but navigating the platforms and stations with crowds was rough.

We flew into Itami Airport (Osaka International Airport) and stayed near Shin-Osaka Station (the Shinkansen bullet train station in Osaka).
Travel time to USJ was about 30 minutes, but we had to transfer at Umeda Station (Osaka’s main subway/JR hub).
② Luggage Problems, Solved
Because USJ doesn’t allow re-entry, you carry a full day’s worth of stuff into the park — change of clothes, snacks, drinks, rain gear, everything.
Lugging all of that on trains and through crowds is exhausting.
Official Hotels have luggage storage before check-in and after check-out, so you can enter the park with minimal bags and travel light.
③ A “Just-in-Case Shelter” for Summer/Winter
I went the first week of July. What I didn’t realize until I was there: USJ has almost no shade or shelter. The buildings are blocky and square.
Combined with strict height restrictions (under 92cm / ~36in can only ride the merry-go-round, tea cups, shows, and parades), there’s nowhere to escape the heat or cold.

Kids’ temperature regulation isn’t fully developed yet, and they often struggle to express when they’re unwell. USJ technically doesn’t allow re-entry, but in unavoidable cases like forgotten items, it may be permitted (this isn’t guaranteed — it’s at the staff’s discretion). Having a hotel right next door as an emergency shelter brings real peace of mind.
④ You Can Buy Tickets at the Hotel
At Official Hotels, you can buy same-day and next-day tickets at the front desk or ticket booth.
The “Universal Express Pass” (which shortens ride wait times) can also be purchased at hotels, but inventory is shared with the park. If pre-sales sell out, the hotel can’t help either — so booking in advance via the official site or international ticket platforms (Klook, KKday, etc.) is strongly recommended.

JTB (a major Japanese travel agency) offers ticket plans with guaranteed Super Nintendo World entry!
If you go in without a guaranteed entry plan, you have to register a free timed entry ticket on the official app right after entering the park. It’s hectic and the app is slow because everyone’s hitting it at once (lol).
If too many people are competing, slots become lottery-based — so if Super Nintendo World is a must, booking through a plan with guaranteed entry is the safest bet!
⑤ Real-Time Wait Times in the Lobby
Official Hotel lobbies have monitors showing real-time ride wait times inside the park.
These days you can check the same info on your phone, but it’s a signature Official Hotel touch — worth noting.
All 7 Official Hotels Compared by Need
There are 7 Official Hotels in total, and each has its own personality.
Here’s a breakdown of each hotel and who it suits best. All are within 10 minutes’ walk between Universal-city Station and the USJ entrance.

Closest to the Park | ① The Park Front Hotel at Universal Studios Japan
Directly in front of USJ’s main gate — by far the closest of the Official Hotels.
Because it’s the closest, some rooms overlook USJ from above (the night view is gorgeous). There are bunk-bed rooms, Hollywood-style rooms with connected beds, and even rare Japanese-style tatami rooms — making it easy for families with small kids.
Bed guards (reservation required) and baby cot rentals (for under 1 year old) are available.
Best for Babies & Crawlers | ② Hotel Universal Port Vita
A bit further from the park, but hugely popular with families with crawling babies thanks to “Mokomoko Rooms” (shoes-off relaxation rooms) and low-profile beds. All rooms have separate bath and toilet — a real help for families with kids. There are themed rooms with various styles, including maisonette-type rooms. Opened in 2018, so the facilities are still relatively new and clean. Bed guards and other items are also available for rent.
For Minions Fans | ③ Hotel Universal Port
The lobby and elevators are Minions everywhere. Themed rooms include missile-shaped beds, and kids’ excitement goes through the roof the moment they walk in. If you have a Minions family — this is the one.
Sesame Street Fans & Close to Park | ④ Hotel Kintetsu Universal City
Just a 1-minute walk to USJ — extremely close.
The “Energy Pop Bunk Bedroom” features loft-style bunk beds and other kid-pleasing setups. There’s a whole Sesame Street–themed floor, and all guests receive an original gift (a Sesame Street™–design original card key & case, as of this writing).
Compared with ① The Park Front Hotel (also right at the park entrance), this hotel often comes in at a more reasonable rate — making it a great pick if proximity is the priority.
Recover from a Long Day | ⑤ The Singulari Hotel & Sky Spa
Directly connected to Universal-city Station, with a large public bath (ofuro — a traditional Japanese-style communal bath) on the top floor. After a full day on your feet, soaking in a spacious bath is a real treat — especially for parents traveling with kids. The atmosphere is refined Japanese-modern, perfect for adults to unwind. Some rooms also have their own oversized in-room baths, which is a nice touch.
Parking is also the cheapest among the Official Hotels at ¥2,400 / 24 hours (~$15) — compared with ¥3,000–3,500 (~$19–23) at the others.
Multi-Generational & Large Groups | ⑥ Hotel Keihan Universal Tower
Top-floor (32F) observation public bath lets you enjoy Osaka Bay night views from 100m (~328ft) up. Connecting rooms (two adjacent rooms linked together) make it ideal for three-generation trips with grandparents. Baby cots and baby bathtubs are available free of charge.
There’s also a Curious George (a beloved children’s book and TV series character) concept room — perfect for George fans!
Best Value Pick | ⑦ Oriental Hotel Universal City
Often the most reasonably priced of the 7 Official Hotels. Rebranded in 2021 as a relatively new hotel, with Simmons-brand beds for comfortable rooms. The top choice for travelers who want “Official Hotel perks without the premium price tag.”
If You Can’t Decide: 2 Top Picks by Budget
When in Doubt | The Park Front Hotel
1-minute walk to the park — no hotel is closer. The peace of mind of being able to return to your room the second your kid melts down, your bags get heavy, or you simply want to leave is unmatched. This hotel delivers the most concentrated “Official Hotel value.”
Best Value | Oriental Hotel Universal City
All the Official Hotel perks at a more reasonable rate. Walking distance to the park, ticket purchase, luggage storage — everything you need, without paying premium prices.
Wrap-Up
When my husband and I went to USJ as a couple years ago, it was simply fun. We were younger, with more energy (lol) — but visiting with kids, especially toddlers who can’t ride attractions, was a completely different world.
Preparing well and having a backup plan really matters.
Popular hotels can book up months in advance. Once your dates are set, lock in both your hotel and tickets to avoid stress!
