A place where the whole family could enjoy the ocean
A backup plan for rainy days
Flexibility to adjust on the fly based on the kids’ mood and the weather
With those priorities in mind, we found Rizzan Sea-Park Hotel Tancha Bay.
The hotel has a private beach right on the property, so getting to the ocean is effortless. There’s also an indoor pool, so even on a cloudy or rainy day, there’s still plenty of fun to be had.
It’s located in Onna Village, right in the middle of the main island of Okinawa, which makes it easy to access places like Churaumi Aquarium without too much driving. We’ve stayed here on multiple Okinawa trips now — it’s just that convenient!
And honestly, for everything it offers, it’s surprisingly affordable. So this entire itinerary is built around Rizzan Sea-Park Hotel Tancha Bay as our home base!

Day 1 | Off from Naha Airport!
It’s about a 3-hour flight from Tokyo to Naha. We usually book an early morning flight (around 6 AM) so we can squeeze every last minute out of the trip.
First Stop: Pick Up the Rental Car!
Once you land, head straight to pick up your rental car. With an early flight, you can usually expect to leave the airport area around 10:00–10:30 AM.
Most rental car companies run shuttle buses from the airport to their offices, with buses running roughly every 15–30 minutes. The shuttle ride itself can take up to 30 minutes, so it takes longer than you might expect. Since luggage goes in the trunk, make sure to keep snacks, drinks, and anything the kids might need during the ride easily accessible. On weekends and during peak season, the buses can get crowded and you may end up in a fold-down seat, so it’s best to build in some extra time.
Once you arrive at the rental car office, allow about 30 minutes to an hour for the check-in process depending on how busy it is.
By the time you’re actually on the road, it’s usually around 11:00–11:30 AM.
Child seats usually need to be requested in advance when booking your rental car, though availability can sometimes be first-come, first-served. To avoid any stress, let the rental company know what type of child seat you need and how many at the time of booking.
Note that child seats are legally required in Japan for children under 6 years old.
Alternatives to Renting a Car
There’s actually a shuttle bus that runs directly from the airport through Onna Village all the way to Churaumi Aquarium. If your itinerary is fairly set, this can be a more affordable and hassle-free option. You could also take the shuttle to the hotel and only rent a car on the days you need one.
There are two main route options from the airport to Onna Village.
The red line shows the regular road (National Route 58), and the white line shows the expressway.
The distance is about 45–50 km. The regular road takes just under 90 minutes, while the expressway takes around 50 minutes.
We usually take the regular road and stop for lunch at a sushi restaurant near American Village. If you take the expressway, there are also service areas where you can grab a bite.
If you take the expressway, AEON Mall Okinawa Rycom is conveniently located near an exit and worth a stop.
※ American Village and AEON Mall Okinawa Rycom are about 15 minutes apart by car, so either is reachable on both routes.
We usually arrive in that area around noon to 12:30. We try to leave by around 2 PM so we have enough time to enjoy the hotel.
American Village
American Village is a lively open-air shopping and dining complex with a distinctly retro-American atmosphere — a nod to Okinawa’s long history of American military presence on the island. It’s perfectly timed for lunch, sitting about 30 minutes from the airport by regular road (and not much faster by expressway).
Parking Info
Nearby parking lots are free or around ¥200 (~$1.25) per hour. Some restaurants have their own parking, but even without it, parking is quite affordable so no need to stress.
The area has a quirky, maze-like layout that kids seem to love exploring — it really does feel like a little adventure.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from for lunch, and after being buckled up in the car, the kids get to run around a bit — win-win!
Stroller Info
There are elevators throughout, so strollers are manageable. That said, there are quite a few stairs and the layout can get a bit winding, so if you don’t need it, leaving the stroller in the car might be easier.
Also, cars pass through the area fairly often due to the parking layout, so keep a close eye on little ones.
Cha-chan
We’re big sushi fans, so we always end up at Gourmet Kaiten Sushi Ichiba. They have kid-friendly options like udon and chawanmushi (Japanese savory egg custard), and there are tatami-style floor seats too, which makes it easier with little ones. It’s a fun spot where you can try sushi made with local Okinawan fish!
Beyond sushi, there are also plenty of side dishes like yakitori (grilled skewers)!
The area has spots with ocean views too, so on cooler days, grabbing takeout and eating outside is a lovely option!
Stock Up on Supplies
There’s an AEON supermarket nearby, so it’s a great chance to stock up on drinks and snacks for the trip. They also carry a solid selection of local souvenirs, so picking those up now can save you time later.
※ There are convenience stores in and around the hotel, but we usually buy juice and snacks for the kids here in bulk.
They also stocked snorkeling gear with quite a good variety!
I’ve also written about items worth bringing on a trip like this — the underwater viewing case in particular was a hit even with little ones. As for life jackets, the hotel does have loaners, but kids can be fussy about fit, so we always bring our own.
It’s about a 30-minute drive from American Village to the hotel. Check-in time varies by plan, but is typically around 3 PM.
Once you’re checked in and the bags are dropped off, it’s time to explore!
All the rooms are quite spacious. There’s a good-sized open area next to the beds where the kids loved playing around.
This is one of the mountain-view rooms we stayed in during our earlier trips. Once we tried an ocean-view room, there was no going back — the view is stunning and falling asleep to the sound of the waves is just wonderful.
Taking in the ocean view from a little elevated spot!
Playing on the swings and slide
Strolling along the beach
Building sandcastles on the beach — there’s so much to do, it’s fun for kids and adults alike!
※ Sand toys are available to borrow at the beach for free!
The indoor and outdoor pools are great fun too!

By booking through Rakuten Travel (a popular Japanese travel site), you can enjoy access to a dedicated lounge.
The hotel has several lounges, but the Rakuten Lounge is great value and our top pick! Anyone who books through Rakuten Travel can use it.
A play area for little ones, plus free drinks!
Massage chairs and more!
After a swim in the ocean or pool, you can pop in for a mango juice — perfect!
💡 Hours: 15:30–21:00 (may vary by season, so check ahead)
Dinner at the Hotel
If your plan includes meals, a relaxed dinner at the hotel on the first night is a great way to ease in!
This is a large resort, so the dining areas are spacious — strollers are welcome, and there’s never a worry about not getting a table. From sit-down restaurants to a BBQ venue, there are plenty of dining options right on the property!
The hotel meal tickets are flexible — you can swap one breakfast ticket for lunch or lounge access, or combine two breakfast tickets for one dinner. Handy!
Cha-chan
Being able to say “let’s eat out tonight!” or “we slept in, let’s use the ticket for lunch instead” is such a relief when you’re traveling with kids. We’ve taken advantage of this so many times!
Since mornings with early travel tend to be rushed, we often deliberately save our breakfast ticket for dinner instead.
An Evening Stroll After Dinner
After a good meal, a slow walk along the water’s edge is one of life’s simple luxuries.
In summer, mosquitoes can be a bit of an issue if you’re sitting still, but a gentle stroll listening to the waves is genuinely lovely — highly recommend!
Day 2 | The Classic Okinawa Experience!
Churaumi Aquarium — First Thing in the Morning
Churaumi Aquarium opens at 8:30 AM.
It’s about an hour’s drive from the hotel. You’re welcome to have breakfast at the hotel first, but we usually arrange to get our breakfast the night before, skip it in the morning, and swap the ticket for lunch or lounge use later in the day.
Red: Hotel → Churaumi Aquarium (~1 hour)
White: Churaumi Aquarium → Kouri Island (~30+ min)
Blue: Hotel ↔ Kouri Island (~1 hour)
🕐 8:30–18:30 (until 20:00 during peak season) 💴 Adults ¥2,180 (~$13.70) / Elementary & middle school students ¥710 (~$4.45) / Under 6 FREE 🅿️ All parking is free! P7 (multi-story) is closest to the aquarium — you’ll pass P2 and others first, but it’s worth going all the way to P7. Free stroller rental available (first-come, first-served) ⏱️ Estimated time with kids: ~2 hours for the aquarium alone, 3–4 hours including surrounding facilities
Arriving early means you can wander through at your own pace before the crowds arrive.
Weekdays are pretty manageable, but weekends are busy even first thing in the morning. The whale shark tank in particular gets very crowded.
There’s a restaurant right in front of the tank with paid seating where you can watch the whale sharks up close while you eat. A great way to enjoy the view without the jostling crowd!
The whale sharks get all the fame, but there are actually a huge number of exhibits — the facility is much bigger than I expected, and even this photo doesn’t capture the whole thing!
Outside the main building, there are also outdoor exhibits including a dolphin show, a sea turtle pavilion, and a manatee area. In summer, the outdoor heat can make extended time outside quite tough.
You can also walk down to a rocky sandy area teeming with gobies (sandals or water shoes recommended).
Both of my boys still nap, so our rule is: enjoy everything until someone gets sleepy, then head to the car. We make the most of the time we have!
We usually end up doing a quick final lap on the way out.
We’re typically back at the car around 1 PM.
Just before the parking lot, there’s an area with one of Japan’s largest net climbing structures — great for kids around 3 and up.
There’s no shade, so it’s always quiet no matter when you go!
My eldest isn’t great with crowds, so he had a great time having the whole thing to himself.
Lunch & Scenery at Kouri Island
Kouri Island is about a 30-minute drive from the aquarium — a perfect nap window for the kids in the car.
The island is famous for the Kouri Bridge, a long, sweeping causeway with stunning views of the crystal-clear “Kouri Blue” ocean on both sides.
We’re huge garlic shrimp fans, so we always end up at KOURI SHRIMP. There are so many other tempting spots on the island, but we just keep coming back — it’s that good.
They also have a non-spicy version and chicken — both are absolutely delicious in their own way!
It gets quite busy on weekends, but if you wait a bit, a table usually opens up. We love sitting outside with the view.
Inside there’s a kids’ area and a diaper changing space, and strollers are welcome.
If the nearby parking is full, you’ll end up parking further down the hill. On weekends it’s almost always full, so we head straight for the free parking lot in the lower area rather than trying to get close to the restaurant.
The catch is that you’ll either need to take a detour or climb these stairs to reach the restaurant, so a baby carrier is recommended over a stroller here.
Cha-chan
Depending on the day and time, it can get really crowded, so if getting a table quickly looks unlikely, takeout is a great option too.
After a full morning out, the kids rarely wake up within 30 minutes in the car, so I usually stay with them while my husband goes to order or holds our spot in line.
Kouri Beach is one of the clearest beaches on the main island of Okinawa. The water is shallow and calm, making it ideal for families with young children. We haven’t actually swum there yet due to timing, but showers and wash stations are available for a few hundred yen (~$1–2), and there are restrooms and changing rooms on site — very convenient.
Once the kids don’t need naps anymore, this beach is definitely on our to-do list!
Other popular spots on the island include Kouri Tower and Heart Rock.
Heart Rock is on the far side of the island — a beautiful and peaceful spot.
The view is lovely even from a distance, but if you want to get close to Heart Rock itself, you’ll need to climb down over some rocks — comfortable sandals or shoes are a good idea.
Back to the Hotel
We’re usually back at the hotel between 3 and 4 PM. After a full day of moving around, the adults are pretty tired by this point! We head to the lounge for a cold drink, then straight to the ofuro (the hotel’s large communal bath — similar to an onsen-style experience) to wash off the day.
If you have a sweets buffet ticket, you can enjoy it in the afternoon before dinner!
If the kids are still full of energy, you could head out for dinner. If you have a dinner included in your plan, that works too. And if not, you can always use two breakfast tickets to convert to one dinner.
Cha-chan
Once the kids are bathed, it’s really just teeth brushing left before bed!
Even if they get a little messy at dinner after the bath, there’s a shower in the room to rinse off quickly — so convenient.
The hotel is nicely air-conditioned throughout, so popping into a play area or joining an activity is a great option too.
The hotel gift shop has a solid selection of souvenirs, so this is also a good time to pick some up!
On a clear evening, grabbing takeout burgers from the nearby burger spot and eating on a bench by the shore while watching the sunset is truly special.
Day 3 | Make the Most of the Hotel → Check Out → Head Home
The last day is all about squeezing every last bit of enjoyment out of the hotel before heading home.
Breakfast at the Hotel
Breakfast is served from 6:30 to 10:00 AM. You could eat first and then head to the beach, or take a morning stroll on the beach and come back for breakfast — either works!
Beach & Pool → Quick Rinse Before Checkout (Optional)
Checkout is at 11 AM, but you’re welcome to keep enjoying the beach after that. Your room won’t be accessible, but the poolside showers are free to use.
In the early morning, the beach is shaded by the building and stays nice and cool! Depending on your flight time, if you’d rather not get wet, a quick play in the sand and a foot rinse is always an option too.
Cha-chan
Even if you manage to use the bath before checkout, your swimwear will still be wet on the way home. A zip-lock bag or small waterproof bag is really handy for that!
On the last day, there’s always that internal battle between wanting to take it easy and wanting to squeeze in every last Okinawa moment!
Large communal bath hours: Morning: 7:00–10:00 Evening: 17:00–23:30 (last entry 22:30; surcharge applies after 20:00)
After checkout, your included bath ticket usually can’t be used, but you can still pay to use it for around ¥1,000 (~$6.30) — worth considering if you have a late flight!
Off to the Airport!
It’s about a 70-minute drive to Naha Airport. Okinawa is very car-dependent, so traffic can be unpredictable — definitely build in some extra time.
Make sure to confirm your rental car return time and the shuttle schedule back to the airport. If you don’t have any stops planned, taking the expressway is the safest bet at this point.
On one trip, there was an unexpected traffic jam near a toll booth — it turned out cars were all piling into the cash lanes. We breezed through with our ETC card (Japan’s electronic toll payment system), so don’t forget yours if you have one!
Key Takeaways from This Trip
When you’re traveling with kids, things rarely go exactly to plan — and that’s completely fine! Building in wiggle room, using nap time for driving, and staying flexible around mealtimes makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable.
Kouri Island is really all about the scenery, so a sunny day makes a big difference — keep that in mind when deciding which day to go.
Dad
A lot of families add a day or two onto a weekend trip for a 2–3 night stay, but this hotel is so reasonably priced that shifting your flights to weekdays can sometimes get you 4–5 nights for what you’d pay for a 2–3 night weekend trip.
And when you stay longer, you unlock perks like a free sweets buffet, lunch buffet, and complimentary parking. Definitely worth looking into!
Just three things: flight + hotel + rental car, and Churaumi Aquarium tickets! The first three are easiest and cheapest as a bundle, and once you’ve sorted your aquarium tickets, you’re all set for a stress-free trip!
Walk-up tickets are available at the aquarium, but during busy seasons there can be long queues, and on rare occasions tickets may sell out. Booking in advance is the safe move!
