NearMe Japan: Airport Shuttle Booking Tips & Honest Review (and Avoiding Our Mistake)

Travel

NearMe — the airport transfer service people say is “cheaper than a taxi and more comfortable than a bus”!

We’d been curious about it too, but honestly, we still haven’t managed to use it…!
The reason: we tried booking last-minute and it just didn’t work out.

That “I wanted to use it but couldn’t” experience got us digging: “How do you actually book it successfully?”
“What areas does it even cover?”
“Who is this service actually good for?” “What are the pros and cons?”
We researched it thoroughly, so here’s everything you need to know if you’re thinking about using it!

What Is NearMe?

NearMe is an AI-matched shared-ride transportation service, with airport transfers as its main offering. It launched in August 2019, and as of 2026 has served over 1.25 million riders in total.

It takes you door-to-door between set locations, and the general concept is a lot like Grab, Uber, or Lyft — but there are several ways it’s different from both a regular taxi and apps like Grab, which we’ll get into in detail.

NearMe’s 5 Services

NearMe actually offers 5 different services depending on what you need. Here’s a quick rundown in table form.

They use AI to efficiently match up riders heading from different starting points to different destinations.

If there are a lot of riders or a lot of luggage, sometimes a private charter actually ends up cheaper.

One slightly tricky part is that coverage varies by service. For our address, Airport Shuttle wasn’t available, but NearMe Taxi was.

This article mainly covers Airport Shuttle and NearMe Taxi, including how to use them and what to watch out for!

Supported Airports and Areas

NearMe covers 19 airports nationwide and the cities around them.

NearMe-Supported Airports (Partial List)
  • Haneda Airport / Narita Airport
  • Kansai Airport / Itami Airport
  • Chubu Centrair International Airport
  • New Chitose, Sendai, Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Miyazaki
  • Naha, Aomori, Nanki-Shirahama, Komatsu, Hiroshima

Unlike a taxi, you can’t ride it absolutely anywhere in the country. Sometimes when you set a location, you’ll get an “outside our service area” message.
Also, because there’s a matching process involved, being able to search for a ride in the app doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually get one.

Otoh
Otoh

Don’t think of it the same way you’d think of a taxi — think of it more as “a great, affordable option when the conditions line up.”

Why NearMe Feels Reliable

Reason #1: Drivers Hold a Type 2 License

In Japan, there’s a special license called a “Type 2 driver’s license” — a special commercial license required in Japan to legally carry paying passengers.

NearMe’s drivers are professional drivers holding a Type 2 license, working for local taxi and hire-car companies. That means you can trust both the safety and the customer service.

Ride-sharing is tightly regulated in Japan, and unlicensed, illegal private drivers — sometimes called “white taxis” in Japan — are against the law. It’s reassuring that this is a fully official, licensed service.

Reason #2: You Know the Price Upfront

NearMe’s price already includes the app dispatch fee, booking fee, pickup fee, and any late-night/early-morning surcharge.

Because of that, your fare is locked in the moment you book. There’s no risk of extra charges beyond the price you confirmed.

Cha-chan
Cha-chan

Even if you end up taking the expressway, or traffic makes the ride longer, the price doesn’t change — that’s a huge reassurance, and one of the biggest differences from a regular taxi.

Shared Ride vs. Private Charter

Let’s compare shared rides and private charters! We’ll also cover how Airport Shuttle differs from a regular taxi along the way.

Shared Rides Are Just Plain Cheap!

Bringing in AI cut down drastically on the manual work of checking dispatch availability, and it also lets drivers pick up passengers more efficiently.

Tip: If the app opens in Japanese, you can switch the language — tap the ☰ menu icon (メニュー) in the bottom right, then the gear “Settings” icon (設定), then look for the speech-bubble icon’s three-dot “Language” option (言語) to choose your language.

As a result, the number of passengers per vehicle (utilization) is maximized, which brings the per-person fare way down (essentially splitting the cost) — and that’s apparently how they managed to make it dramatically cheaper than a taxi.

At the time you book, NearMe calculates the “likelihood that other riders will join” and shows you a low, fixed price based on that. If more strangers end up joining on the day, the price won’t drop any further — but on the flip side, if no one else ends up joining and it turns into a private ride, the price won’t go up either.

“Too cheap” can feel suspicious, but there’s a solid reason behind it, so it’s reassuring.

Shared Ride: Pros and Cons

Shared Ride Pros
  • Cheaper fares → the biggest advantage. You’re splitting one vehicle, so it’s significantly cheaper than a typical taxi. Since it’s a flat rate, the price is locked in when you book, which is another nice touch.
  • Easy door-to-door travel → they pick you up right where you set your location!
  • Eco-friendly → there are social benefits too, like lower CO2 emissions and less road congestion.
  • Sometimes you end up with a private ride anyway
Shared Ride Cons
  • You need to be considerate of other passengers
  • Your ride can take longer → since the route may detour to pick up or drop off other riders, it can take longer to arrive than a direct private taxi ride (you’ll see an estimated time in advance when you book, though!).
  • There’s less flexibility on timing → it’s hard to request “please arrive at exactly this time” — you’ll typically get a window like “we’ll pick you up sometime between X and Y.”

This isn’t just about shared rides — it applies to NearMe overall — but we saw reviews mentioning that, in the effort to make the best possible matches, it can sometimes take a while for a booking to actually get confirmed, or last-minute bookings don’t always go smoothly.

Otoh
Otoh

When the matching works out well, it sounds like you can end up paying up to 80% less than a taxi!

There’s also a group discount — when multiple people travel to the same place together, the per-person price can drop by up to about 70%!

⚠️ If you book a shared ride, make sure you’re waiting at your pickup spot on time! We saw reviews mentioning that showing up even a little late meant getting left behind.

⚠️ With a shared ride, there’s a chance you’ll have to wait for other passengers.
Book with some buffer time built in!

Private Charters Are Just Plain Comfortable!

NearMe uses large vehicles like the Toyota HiAce or Alphard (large van/minivan models), seating up to 9.

Since the service is built around shared rides, you get the same large vehicle even when you book a private charter.

Cha-chan
Cha-chan

We once had trouble fitting a stroller into a regular taxi.

Even with a lot of people or a lot of luggage, it’s reassuring that you set the number of passengers and amount of luggage in advance.

Another Great Thing About NearMe: You Can Earn Airline Miles!

You can even earn JAL, ANA, or STARFLYER miles.

If you pay with a credit card that also earns miles, you’ll separately earn the card’s own miles on top of whatever NearMe awards you — essentially double-dipping.

Cha-chan
Cha-chan

Earning miles is great, and being able to choose which program to earn them in is a nice touch too! Just make sure the name on your NearMe account matches the name on your mileage account exactly.

ANA miles, STARFLYER miles → 1 mile per 200 yen (approx. $1.33) spent (0.5% earn rate)
JAL miles → 1 mile per 100 yen (approx. $0.67) spent (1% earn rate)

⚠️NearMe Limo (private charter) is not eligible.
⚠️You need to enter the airline’s flight number in the flight number field and register the correct mileage membership number when you book.

This is subject to change, so it’s worth double-checking — but there have been past campaigns where the earn rate was boosted.

Booking Tips and Things to Watch Out For

One thing to know about NearMe: booking doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually get a ride. That said, booking in advance is the way to make sure you get one — and get it cheaply.

Last-minute or day-before bookings sometimes fail to match, or come with a smaller discount (this seems especially true during busy commute-hour traffic).

That said, the app will sometimes suggest a cheaper nearby time slot — so it might be worth searching your planned time just to see if there’s a better deal.

Tip: Switch to English via ☰ menu icon (メニュー) → the gear “Settings” icon (設定)speech-bubble icon’s three-dot “Language” option (言語).

Book Early to Save (Early-Bird Discount)

NearMe also has an early-bird discount. The earlier you book, the cheaper it gets, so once your travel dates are set, it’s worth booking early!

Discount rates and prices can vary by specific date, time, and area, but booking ahead generally gets you a lower price, roughly as follows.

30+ days ahead: up to 23% off. The best discount available
14+ days ahead: up to 15% off.
7+ days ahead: up to 10% off.
1+ day ahead: up to 5% off.

⚠️Discount details are subject to change.

As I’ll explain below, you can cancel, so booking as soon as your plans are set is a good way to lock in both availability and a lower price!

When Cancellation Fees Kick In

The timing for cancellation fees also varies depending on which service you’re using.

For Airport Shuttle

Free up until 48 hours before your scheduled pickup time
30% of the fare from 48 hours down to 24 hours before

For NearMe Taxi

Free cancellation up until 1 hour before pickup

Just like the coverage area, it’s easy to mix up the rules since they differ by service. Make sure you know the exact terms for whichever service you’re using!

Free Cancellation for Flight Delays

For Airport Shuttle, if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed, you can cancel for free.

Upload proof of the flight delay, and you’ll be refunded within 3 business days.

Once you have a new confirmed time, rebook right away!

Who NearMe Is (and Isn’t) a Good Fit For

Great for These Kinds of People
  • Families with lots of luggage or a stroller: this often just won’t fit in a regular taxi!
  • Larger groups: seats up to 9 people
  • Anyone wanting to earn airline miles: works with JAL, ANA, and STARFLYER
  • Anyone who wants to know the exact price up front: flat rate, locked in when you book
  • Anyone hoping to save even more via shared rides: shared-ride discounts can be significant
Not the Best Fit For
  • Coverage is limited to major cities: it doesn’t reach smaller local areas
  • Bookings need to be finalized by 6 PM the day before: not great for last-minute trips (though if a match happens, you can still get a ride even on short notice!)
  • Not ideal for short “around-the-corner” trips: it works best for travel between major hubs

How to Use NearMe: What Scenarios Does It Work Best For?

Since NearMe works differently from a taxi, using it well takes a bit of a knack. In practice, that means there are situations where it works great, and situations where it doesn’t.

When NearMe Works Well
  • Tokyo Station/downtown ↔ Haneda or Narita Airport
  • Tokyo ↔ Mt. Fuji, Gotemba, Kamakura, etc.
  • Airport ↔ Disneyland
  • Airport ↔ major hotels

Key point: less likely to be “outside the service area” → NearMe Taxi has a lot of vehicles dispatched to popular, high-traffic spots.

When NearMe Isn’t the Best Fit
  • Short hops, like from home to the nearest station
  • Last-minute rides

Key point: last-minute bookings sometimes fail to find a match, so you might not be able to use it at all.

Luggage for Airport Transfers

With Airport Shuttle, you can bring up to 10 pieces of luggage, like suitcases or golf bags. (For NearMe Taxi, it’s up to 3.)

The size limit is under 200cm total for all 3 dimensions combined (each side under 150cm), and anything you keep with you counts separately.

Since the vehicles are large, they can also accommodate strollers and wheelchairs (*).

Cha-chan

*They told us they don’t currently offer a wheelchair-accessible vehicle type that lets you stay seated in your wheelchair.

Otoh

Public transit gets crowded during commute hours. This is especially great if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage and don’t want to deal with that.

Private Charters to Sightseeing Spots

You can also book a private charter to sightseeing destinations — in the Kansai region, between cities like Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara; in the Kanto region, spots like Nikko, Kamakura, or the Mt. Fuji area.

For example, say you’re staying in Tokyo and want to day-trip out to see Mt. Fuji. You could take a train or highway bus, but the more people in your group, the more the total cost adds up — plus there’s the hassle of booking, and often you need a separate ride from the station to your actual destination, all of which eats up time.

Blue marks the Fuji Five Lakes area (the Mt. Fuji area), and red marks the Gotemba/Hakone area.

You get a different view of Mt. Fuji from each one.

Here are some scenarios where we think this works especially well:

  1. Sightseeing and returning to Tokyo the same day (round trip)
  2. Sightseeing and then staying overnight at a local hotel, since you can keep your luggage in the car the whole time (one-way)

On weekends and holidays, expressway traffic backs up starting early in the morning for this kind of route — a trip that normally takes 1.5 hours from central Tokyo can take over 3 hours. So if you’re driving to these sightseeing areas, we’d recommend departing before 6 AM on weekdays, or before 6 AM if it falls on a weekend/holiday.

In Summary

NearMe turned out to be a service with real appeal on two fronts: “cheap if you share a ride” and “comfortable if you charter a large vehicle.”

It’s not available absolutely everywhere the way a taxi is, at least for now — but it seemed to cover the airports and most popular sightseeing areas well.

NearMe offers a different kind of convenience than a regular taxi — definitely give it a try if you get the chance!

Thanks so much for reading all the way to the end!
